Historical Preservation and Restoration

There is a big difference in Historical Preservation and Remodeling. When working with historical properties many times a lot of the value of that project is in passion, either from the home owner or investor. There are many trades craft secrets in restoring old properties that have been lost in translation in the modern contracting world. Now contractors are trained to replace and not to repair or restore.

Massive prep work prior to painting is key to success when working with old wood on historical homes.

Not pictured here was the two weeks of sanding and prep work that went into the siding prior to painting. These projects require a lot of detail and patience. If not prepped correctly the primer and paint will not properly adhere to the old siding. Many times the old siding was treated with an oil, and may have even been stained. Sanding, retailing, screwing, and caulking all prepare the surface for a proper primer and paint adhesion. These technique surface bonds the primer allowing it to soak into the aged wood.
